California is showing the nation and the world that we are committed to fighting obesity, being fit and living healthy. I had fun working with the Calif Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and my team of young boys and girls at Kentwood Elementary School in Los Angeles.  We welcomed and escorted celebrities Tony Hawk, pro-Skateboarder, Laila Ali, pro-Boxer, and Peter Vidmar, Olympic Gymnastics Gold Medalist. The Governor announced that more than 1 million students have participated in the 2010 Governor's Fitness Challenge. Kentwood's students have recorded 57,000 days of physical activity, more than any other LA school. Their academic performance index (API) rose +5 percent and their scores for healthy fitness zone on the Calif Physical Fitness Test jumped from 49 to 63%!

I am so honored to work another year on the Spotlight Awards committee finding California's real fitness heroes! The California Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports shines a spotlight on individuals, organizations, and events that positively impact physical activity & fitness levels of our state’s children. I attended the ceremony as Gov Arnold Schwarzenegger honored the winners at the State Capitol in Sacramento with Vice Chair, Olympic Gymnastics Gold Medalist Peter Vidmar, Council Chair Jake Steinfeld, Exec Dir Kenny Rogers, Lee Anderson of General Mills, and many friends. Special thanks to Hugo Rojas, Lt.Tarone of LAX Airport Police & Lisa for SAC airport ride! Two special men on our Council - Jack LaLanne "Godfather of Fitness" and "Body by" Jake Steinfeld - have been my fitness mentors throughout my life!

My friend Bill McMillan at Bogifit Youth Conditioning Center in Anaheim invited me to meet Karch Kiraly, the most winningest player in volleyball history, and his fitness coach Mike Rangel. Karch was the only player to win Olympic medals in both indoor volleyball with Gold medals in 1984 and 1988 and beach volleyball in 1996. He has won more tournaments than any other player on the AVP Pro Beach Tour. He was also the oldest player to ever compete at the highest level AVP tournaments, while beating competitors half his age. Karch retired from the AVP tour at the end of the 2007 season, and worked as broadcaster for ESPN. He was an analyst for NBC Sports coverage of Beach Volleyball at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Karch was assistant Coach for the USA Women’s Volleyball Team in the 2012 Olympics in London, taking over the job as Coach and headed for the 2016 Olympics!

On Super Bowl Sunday, an estimated 40,000 people took advantage of the sunshine, blue clear skies and cool ocean breeze to cheer on 20,000 runners. This year the sold out Surf City USA® Marathon, Half Marathon, 5K and Kids Runs had participants from all 50 states and 13 foreign countries. Over $200,000 was raised by over 400 runners for the Free Wheelchair Mission to send 3,000 specially engineered wheelchairs to Haiti and worldwide! The Active Lifestyle Expo before the event was wonderful. This race is an emotional experience to me as I photograph the racers, especially those with severe disabilities. They inspire me to overcome adversity. I praise God! Heb 12:1..And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Photography/04%20Love%20Ride%202008%20with%20Jay%20Leno%20Calif/default_t.jpg Love Ride 2008 with Jay Leno Calif
Every year, I get to meet Jay Leno, who presides over the ride. Over $1 Mil for charities with festivities at Pomona Fairplex was raised. 20,000 motorcyclists came from across the U.S. and around the world rode, which convoyed from Harley-Davidson®/Buell of Glendale. Since 1984, Love Ride has become the world’s largest one-day motorcycle fundraising event, donating over $21 million to non-profit organizations. Celebrity riders included Harley-Davidson legend Willie G. Davidson, his wife, Peter Fonda, & actor Robert Patrick. Beneficiaries of funds included Muscular Dystrophy, Autism Speaks, Children's Hospital L.A., Catholic Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Special Olympics, etc. Foo Fighters and ZZ Top played. This is part of California Bike Week, a 3-day rally that is to become the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Bike Week and the Sturgis Bike Rally.

The 12th Annual Southern California BAD Ride (Bikers Against Diabetes) raised funds for the American Diabetes Association. Rip Rose, biker and Easyriders photojournalist, who passed away, continues his dream. This year's event at Oak Canyon Park had a jail for "doin time for diabetes". Snoopy from Knott's Berry Farm participated. The Victor McLaglen Motor Corps performed their fantastic stunts. Our Christian Motorcyclists Association (CMA) Chapter, Calvary Riders Orange County, volunteered and helped. We gave out rags to bikers walking by our booth. Rags clean up messes, just like Jesus cleans up our messes!
Photography/06%20AVP%20HB%20Open%20Mens%20Finals%20Calif%205-2009/default_t.jpg AVP HB Open Mens Finals Calif 5-2009
Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, reigning beach volleyball gold medalists, won the AVP Crocs Tour Huntington Beach Open. Dalhausser and Rogers, the top seeds, beat second-seeded Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal, 22-20, 21-17, to win their fourth title in five events this season. Facing game point in the first game and down 20-19, Dalhausser and Rogers calmly sided out to tie the game at 20. Dalhausser took over with a block and an ace. They were up 1-0 in the match. They got ahead 5-2 in the second game, and then a short Rosie/Gibb rally tied the score at 13. Rogers and Dalhausser then stayed ahead to win.

The AVP Crocs Tour Huntington Beach Open was spectacular. The Men's Semi Finals had John Hyden and Sean Scott leading Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers a few times through the two games. But the winners, top seeds and Olympic gold medalists, Phil Dalhausser and Todd Rogers, ended up winning to move on to the finals against Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal. The excitement was great and you just never knew if it was going to a third game.

Top-seeded Nicole Branagh and Elaine Youngs won the women's title after beating second-seeded Jen Kessy and April Ross, 21-19 and 21-17. In game one, Branagh and Youngs went on a 7-1 run to stay ahead after being down 12-10 in game one. In game two, they took an early lead and retained it throughout the game with a Branagh ace at 14-12. They definitely replaced Misty May-Treanor, who was injured in Dancing with the Stars, and new mother Kerri Walsh. Branagh and Youngs won four of five tournaments so far and have a record of 25-1.

In the Huntington Beach Open, Elaine Young and Nicole Branagh took out third seeded Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordon. The women were fantastic with serves, passes, blocks, hits and tied scores that had you sitting on the edge of your bleechers. The sunny day turned brighter when Young and Branagh won the 2nd game with 21-17, moving them on to the Women's Finals.

Huntington Beach Pier was the meeting place for First Christian Church Huntington Beach volleyball games. Every Tuesday night from March until October, we played while Surf-City Nights happened a street away. People visiting this great resort city sometimes watched us from the Pier above and some joined us. The beach volleyball games are led by Mark L. from the FCC Sports Ministry. This ministry exists to encourage men and women to participate in recreation and sports activities to build relationships, have fun and a great outreach to the community. At the end of the night, we thank God for our blessings, enjoyment and safety for the coming week!

After admiring his wonderful Harley, I got a hug from Jay Leno, our Grand Marshal. He was leading the Love Ride on a new route and venue as part of the inaugural California Bike Week at the Fairplex in Pomona. Thousands of bikers joined us as we braved the threat of rain to raise over $900,000 to fund local children’s charities, while $20 million+ was raised over the last 2 decades. Founder Oliver Shokouh and his Glendale Harley Davidson dealership act as host every Nov for the world’s largest one-day motorcycle charity event with celebrities like Peter Fonda and Willie Davidson. Musicians included All-Star Band with Robby Krieger (The Doors) and Rock ‘n Roll Hall Of Fame Gregg Allman.

On Sept 18th, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced 7 winners of the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness & Sports Spotlight Awards presented by Blue Cross of CA Foundation at Marvin Elementary School in Los Angeles. The school was selected as School of the Year for having won the Governor's Challenge Competition, a contest engaging 69,000 students in physical activity. The school won a brand new fitness center. Olympic gold medalist in gymnastics Peter Vidmar, skateboarding idol, Tony Hawk, 3 time Olympic gold medalist in women's softball Lisa Fernandez, Council Chairman Jake Steinfeld, founder of Major League Lacrosse and "Body by Jake", and Exec Director Kenny Rogers made this event spectacular. I was honored to help our volunteer team as a liaison!

I flew to Wachington D.C. to celebrate the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports 50th Anniversary and Nat'l Physical Fitness and Sports Month at RFK Stadium on May 6th. This was the 3rd Healthier US Fitness Challenge. The Harlem Globetrotters performed and signed autographs. Sports and fitness experts had exhibits, classes, interactive sports and games, & free health screenings. President Council Exec Director Melissa Johnson and Christine Spain, Dir Planning & Special Projects conveyed our Nation's strong commitment to health, physical activity, and fitness. The HealthierUS Veterans kickoff honored guests and celebrities. My daughter, granddaughters and I had fun hula hooping, jump roping, dancing, exercising, and other activities.
Photography/08%20AVP%20Volleyball%20Championships%20Calif%205-2008/default_t.jpg AVP Volleyball Championships Calif 5-2008
Thousands of spectators showed up for the Huntington Beach Open. Men's team Jake Gibb and Sean Rosenthal and women's team Elaine Young and Nicole Branagh brought home the AVP Cuervo Gold Crown Championships with a $25,000 bonus. The added day of competition (just an extra tournament) forced the best women's team in the world Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh to bow out since Kerri's shoulder ached (from earlier surgery). They already qualified for the Beijing Olympics. The risk was too great to stay after beating Annett Davis and Jenny Johnson Jordon easily in the semifinals. That was proved when Misty and Kerri brought home Gold Medals in Aug 08.
Photography/08%20Los%20Angeles%20Marathon%20Calif%202007/default_t.jpg Los Angeles Marathon Calif 2007
We had fun following the racers at the LA Marathon in March. Honda sponsored the race and again supported Students Run LA. The Students were so motivated and their training surely paid off. The Honda Team with my friend Dan Montgomery and his friends had his wife Karen and us cheering, screaming and clapping. The 26 mile course was completely revised, so we had to find our way driving to the mileposts that were quite different than last year. Our views from Hollywood and Vine were wonderful. I asked a very nice LAPD cop to move his butt out of my picture as I captured the spectacular wheelchair racers' determination. Thank you Mr. Nice Police Officer and all the great LAPD for your work and efforts for this event!

I ran for my stepmother Janet, cousin Angela, friends Sheila, Pirette, Donna, Jean and those with God - Eileen and Nancy. The Susan G. Komen Orange County Race for the Cure has made a big difference in the fight against breast cancer. 30,000 people attended this year's race. The morning started out a bit foggy, but the color pink glowed everywhere throughout the day! Always remember that "I am the Cure".

On Tuesday night, April 14th, we played our weekly beach volleyball sponsored by First Christian Church's Sports Ministry led by Mark Lundquist. This time, we missed our calmness at Huntington Beach Pier. Strong winds whipped us and the sand blew hard into our eyes and faces. But we stayed because we are the "Diehards". No arms nor hands could steer the ball, but we would not give up. I even had the pleasure of having my face and legs exfoliated for free, while I ran fast to capture photos before my lens became a permanent sand toy. In all of this, we graciously accepted God's hand in blessing us with fun and fellowship! And the night ended with a thankful prayer, and an awesome and glorious sunset...

First Christian Church Huntington Beach sponsored the games for men and women to get involved. We played Tuesday nights while Surf-City Nights happened downtown. After the games we would go to eat and watch the entertainment. We diehards played until it got too dark, which happened in October when we were forced to call it quits. I strive to make a difference as I celebrate with the survivors, honor my sisters who lost their battle, and raise awareness for the fight against breast cancer. Pink is a special color!

Honda again sponsored this spectacular race. Employees Dan Montgomery and his friends did it again! We followed from the 1 mile point at Staples Center to the finish line near the Bonaventure Hotel where Honda's Hospitality Room was. What was truly amazing were those men and women who overcame their adversities. They raced on crutches, wheelchairs, cycles and even skateboards. Then there were those who pushed children with diseases in strollers and wheelchairs. What awesome passion and determination!

The LA Marathon took place in March. Honda sponsored the race and provided a hospitality room in the Bonaventure Hotel. My friend Dan Montgomery ran on the Honda Team. His wife Karen and I with a few friends drove to many mile spots to photograph Dan and his friend Andy as they raced along the 26 mile course. I think we got as tired as the racers trying to find the right place at the right time and capture those special motivating moments!

Highlands, NJ is home to the Memoria Project that Sculptor Steven Shaheen wanted as a lasting tribute to lives lost and survivors. It is the Christmas season, over a year since the tragedy of 9-11. Ground Zero and St. Paul's Chapel are heavily visited to reflect and give respect to those lost. A Viewing Wall was constructed where visitors see the work being done and view the memorials. The new Atrium illustrates the spirit and courage of New York and America with plans for rebuilding the Ground Zero site.

I took these photos at NY Ground Zero following 9-11-01. The photos at St. Paul’s Chapel, down the street from Ground Zero, reflect visitors’ honor and remembrance. The Chapel was open to Rescue Workers. Visitors from all over the world created handmade memorials there. Many of the photos were taken from the Viewing Platform that was constructed in Jan 2002. I took the Tribute in Light photos from Jersey City, 6 months after 9-11. The skyline in New York will never be the same, but the Spirit that followed will live forever!

Photography/92%20Christmas%20in%20NY%20After%209-11/default_t.jpg Christmas in NY After 9-11
Christmas was solemn this year, and former Mayor Rudy Giuliani asked for support for the City. That truly happened. I grew up in a city not far from NY and witnessed more love, prayers, friendliness, peace, and hope after Sept.11th.  Tears were plentiful.
Photography/93%20Memoria%20Project,%20NJ%209-11%20Two%20Years%20Later/default_t.jpg Memoria Project, NJ 9-11 Two Years Later
A Candlelight Vigil took place in Highlands, NJ, temporary home for this monument. Created for families and friends to heal and remember those lost in Monmouth County, the Statues, representing the Twin Towers, look out over the beach. The human figures sculpted within, display emotions that permeate reality. Photographed in existing light at dusk and night to witness the candlelight and solitude, without flash to disrupt the mood.
Photography/94%20Freehold,%20NJ%209-11%20One%20Year%20Tribute/default_t.jpg Freehold, NJ 9-11 One Year Tribute
My second home, Freehold Township, NJ, had their dedication on 9-10. A large crowd came for the unveiling of the beautiful Memorial. It is constructed of black granite with Twin Towers each 9’ 11” tall. The 5 sides of the Pentagon base are engraved and inlaid with gold. Also enshrined inside the base are pieces of the World Trade Center. Bruce Springsteen, originally from Freehold, remembered 9-11 with his CD “Rising”.

When the Memorial was just an idea in 1989, the New Jersey Vietnam Veterans Last Patrol marched from the Washington, D.C. Vietnam Veterans Memorial to Holmdel, NJ with 1,486 names of NJ POW’s, men, and women who sacrificed their lives. I was present for that march and for the dedication with former Gov. Florio in 1994. This Memorial is a lasting tribute built with many years of effort.

The Post Office in Cranbury, NJ was dedicated to the heroism of Todd Beamer, known for his part in helping to take down the hijackers of Flight 93.  His words “Let’s Roll” will always be remembered. The town next to Cranbury is Monroe Township where I lived many years. The beautiful memorial represents the men who died that day from this rural suburb. From Mount Mitchell in Atlantic Highlands, NJ, you can see Sandy Hook with its old lighthouse across the bay from the New York skyline.
